The Berlin wall was everyone’s business. We lived in East Berlin or Leipzig, had our student digs in Kreuzberg, or commuted via the transit routes between West Berlin and the Ruhr Valley or Hamburg. The wall dictated our daily lives, either by standing monolithically in the way of our very existence or accepted tacitly as an immutable border. Nobody anticipated it falling within the foreseeable future.

BEYOND THE WALL is the Neue Schule für Fotografie’s tribute to the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, by members who lived through the re-unification of Germany and captured the turbulent times around 1989 from various angles. In some cases, the works on display have been rediscovered in the depths of private archives solely for this exhibition, in other cases the images reveal their poignancy only in retrospect.
