Michael Biedowicz

Michael Biedowicz was born in 1955 in Görlitz. He moved to Greifswald where he finished school. A self-taught photographer from an early age, he studied photography at Kunsthochschule Weißensee . From 1978 to 1988 he was a photographer at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in Berlin. It was an important creative period for him. During this time he got his first taste for journalism as a freelancer for a church newspaper, becoming editor in 1988 for publishinng house Henschel, where he edited “Bildende Kunst”, the GDRs only art newspaper.

In the early 90s, Michael Biedowicz was a founding member of “taz ddr”. From 1992-1997 he was a part of the editing team of the Berlin weekly “Wochenpost”. In 1997 after they shut down he moved to. zeit, where he currently works as photo editor for ZEIT magazinenach. In 2015 he led the photography seminar of the ZEIT Akademie. In 2011 he cofounded the Gallery pavlov’s dog, where, in contrast to his daily work as photo editor, he dealt instead with artistic photography. He is he is a member of many award juries, such as Deutschen Jugendfotopreises, Lotto Kunstpreis and n-ost Reportagepreises.

Michael Biedowicz began teaching in 2004 as a guest lecturer at Merz Akademie and has given lectures and workshops at the Neue Schule für Fotografie since 2005. In his teaching he focuses on the role words and images play when combined, and the editing of series. He likes passing on his knowledge and openly discusses the new challenges posed by changes in the field. Thoery is methodically reinforced by practical exercises. He dislikes constraints, feeling that the world is full of interesting themes as lon as one has an open mind.
