Born in 1967, a childhood in Stuttgart was more than enough for Marc. He moved to Hamburg after graduation from school and did his Social Year there. After enjoying a couple of post-wall years in Berlin, Marc Volk began to study Communications Design with a focus on Photography at the Folkwangschule in Essen. In 1994 he recieved a scholarship from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and completed his degree with honours in 1998 under Prof. Inge Oswald and Prof. Peter Wippermann.
Marc has been exhibiting his work since 1994, and a magazine and corporate freelance photographer since 1995. Travelling around the world sharpened his perception for good imagery and many years assisting Stephan Erfurt paved the way for his career into photography, leading him back to Berlin in 1998.
In 2007 Marc Volk began teaching at the Neue Schule für Fotografie, a commitment which has continuously grown since, alongside which he gives workshops at C/O Berlin. Central to his classes are discussions about pictures, where an accurate analysis of an image is just as important as an accurate analysis of its contextualisation. Marc finds it particularly important to encourage students to sharpen their perception and precision, and reflect upon how photography differs from other media.
